On 8 March 2018 RTU was delighted to be invited to the official opening of the Great Light and Titanic Walkway in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter. This event also coincided with the launch of The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in Northern Ireland.
The Great Light, the world’s first and largest hyper-radial Fresnel lighthouse lens, was installed in Tory Island Lighthouse in 1887, before moving to Mew Island Lighthouse in 1928 where it remained until 2014 when the optic was removed and the lighthouse was converted to solar power.
The Great Light now not only brings light to the new Titanic walkway, but also tells the historical story of lighthouses and light-keepers as well as their role in Belfast’s maritime and industrial past.
RTU was delighted to be commissioned by architects Hall McKnight to supply and install approximately 2000 square metres of Exposa Pavilion Grey 00 for the walkway and pedestrian areas around the Great Light and the Titanic Walkway.
Exposa® is RTU’s award winning range of decorative concrete, an aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional paving, asphalt, tarmac and loose gravel. Exposa® is designed to withstand heavy traffic and extremes of weather without deterioration, and benefits from a slip resistant finish. Furthermore, with a low maintenance finish Exposa® also inhibits the proliferation of weeds and moss making it the ideal choice for the pedestrian walkways in the Titanic area.
